4 — Surayj ibn Yūnus, Ishāq ibn Ismāīl, and others narrated to us. They said: Jarīr ibn Abd al-Hamīd narrated to us, from Abd al-Azīz ibn Rufay, from Abū Thumāma, who said:
The disciples asked Jesus, peace be upon him, “What is sincerity to Allah?”
He replied, “It is for a person to do a deed without wishing that anyone should praise him for it.”
They asked, “Who, then, is truly sincere toward Allah?”
He replied, “The one who gives precedence to Allah’s right over the rights of people. When presented with two matters—one concerning this world and the other concerning the Hereafter—he gives precedence to what pertains to Allah over what pertains to this world.”
[4] Surayj ibn Yūnus ibn Ibrāhīm al-Baghdādī was a trustworthy worshipper. He died in 235 AH. See *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, vol. 10, p. 221; and *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 229.
Ishāq ibn Ismāīl al-Tālaqānī was trustworthy; criticism concerned only his transmission from Jarīr. He died in 230 AH or earlier. See *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, vol. 2, p. 409; and *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 100.
Jarīr ibn Abd al-Hamīd ibn Qurt al-Dabbī al-Kūfī settled in Rayy and served as its judge. He was trustworthy and maintained accurate written records, though it was said that late in life he sometimes erred when narrating from memory. He died in 188 AH. See *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, vol. 4, p. 540; and *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 139. In both editions of *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, either the word “one hundred” has been omitted from his death date or his biographical tier is misstated; this should be corrected.
Abd al-Azīz ibn Rufay al-Asadī, Abū Abd al-Malik, was trustworthy. He died in 103 AH. See *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 357.
Abū Thumāma al-Hannāt was from the Hijaz. Al-Dhahabī stated: “He is unknown, and his report is *munkar* (denounced).” See *al-Mughnī*, no. 7367; and *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 627.
٤ - حدثنا سُرَيْج بنُ يُونُس ، وإسحاقُ بنُ إسماعيل ، وغيرُهما ، قالوا : حدثنا جَرِيرُ بنُ عبد الحميد ، عن عبد العزيز بن رُفَيْع :
عن أبي ثُمامة قال :
قال الحواريُّون لعيسى عليه السلام : ما الإخلاصُ لله ؟
قال : الذي يَعملُ العملَ لا يُحِبُّ أنْ يَحمَدَهُ عليه أحدٌ مِن الناس .
قالوا : فَمَنِ المُناصِحُ لله ؟
قال : الذي يبدأُ بحقِّ الله قبلَ حقِّ الناس ، إذا عُرِض عليه أمران أحدُهما للدنيا والآخَرُ للآخرةِ بدأ بأمرِ الله قبل أمرِ الدنيا .
[ ٤ ] - سُرَيْج بن يُونُس بن إبراهيم البغدادي ، ثقة عابد ، مات سنة ٢٣٥ ؛ « تهذيب الكمال » ۲۲۱/۱۰ ، و « التقريب » : ٢٢٩ .
إسحاق بن إسماعيل الطالقاني ، ثقة تُكلّم في سماعه من جرير وحده ، مات سنة ٢٣٠ أو قبلها . « تهذيب الكمال » ٤٠٩/٢ ، و « التقريب » : ١٠٠ .
جرير بن عبد الحميد بن قُرط الضبّي الكوفي ، نزيل الرّي وقاضيها ، ثقة صحيح الكتاب ، قيل : كان في آخر عمره يَهِمُّ من حفظه ، مات سنة ١٨٨ ؛ « تهذيب الكمال » ٥٤٠/٤ ، و « التقريب » : ۱۳۹ وقد سقط من طبعتي « تقريب التهذيب » لفظة « مئة » من سنة وفاته ، أو ذكر الطبقة ، فَلْيُصَوَّب .
عبد العزيز بن رُفيع الأسدي ، أبو عبد الملك ، ثقة ، مات سنة ١٠٣ . « التقريب » : ٣٥٧ .
أبو ثُمامة الحَنّاط ، حجازي ، قال الذهبي : لا يُعرف ، وخبرُه منكر . « المغني » : (٧٣٦٧) ، و « التقريب » : ٦٢٧ .
