Al-Ikhlas wa-l-NiyyaIbn Abi al-Dunya

1 — Abū Mūsā al-Harawī Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Abd al-Jabbār Abū Muāwiya al-Sinjārī, the son of the sister of(1) Ubayda ibn Hassān, narrated to us, saying: Ubayda ibn Hassān narrated to us, from Abd al-Hamīd ibn Thābit ibn Thawbān, the client of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—who said: My father narrated to us, from my grandfather, who said:

One day, I attended a gathering with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and he said: “Blessed are the sincere! They are lamps of guidance, and every dark tribulation is dispelled from them(2).”

[1] Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Maīn and others. See *Lisān al-Mīzān*, vol. 1, p. 382. Amr ibn Abd al-Jabbār ibn Hayyān: Ibn Adī said, “He narrated objectionable reports from his uncle, Ubayda ibn Hassān.” See Ibn Adī, *al-Kāmil*, vol. 5, p. 141; and *Lisān al-Mīzān*, vol. 4, p. 425. Ubayda ibn Hassān: Abū Hātim described him as *munkar al-hadīth* (a transmitter of objectionable hadith). Al-Samānī said: “Khālid ibn Hayyān al-Raqqī and his nephew Amr ibn Abd al-Jabbār ibn Hayyān narrated from him. He transmitted fabricated reports from trustworthy authorities. We recorded from him a collection of nearly one hundred hadith through these authorities, all of which were fabricated. I do not know whether he deliberately fabricated them or whether they were inserted into his collection and he then transmitted them. Whichever of these two possibilities is correct, his reports cannot be cited as evidence.” See *al-Ansāb*, vol. 3, p. 314; and *al-Mughnī fī al-Duafā*, no. 3985. Abd al-Hamīd ibn Thābit ibn Thawbān: I found no biographical notice for him. The name may be a corruption of Abd al-Rahmān ibn Thābit ibn Thawbān, whose biography appears in *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, vol. 6, p. 150. Thābit ibn Thawbān al-Ansī al-Dimashqī was trustworthy and belonged to the sixth generation of transmitters. See *Tahdhīb al-Kamāl*, vol. 4, p. 349; and *Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb*, p. 132. (1) This is how it appears in the original; the correct reading is “brother,” not “sister,” as found in *al-Ansāb*, vol. 3, p. 314; *al-Kāmil*, vol. 5, p. 1790; and *Lisān al-Mīzān*, vol. 4, p. 425. (2) Narrated by Abū Nuaym al-Isfahānī in *Hilyat al-Awliyā*, vol. 1, p. 16, and by al-Daylamī, as cited in *Fayd al-Qadīr*, no. 5289. Its chain of transmission is very weak.
