• and knowledge of the occasion on which a hadith was uttered; some of the shaykhs (1) of the judge (2) Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Farrāʾ (3) have produced independent works on this subject.
They have also composed treatises covering most of these (4) other categories. All of this is pure transmission, plainly defined, and in no need (5) of illustrative examples (6); whoever wishes may therefore consult (7) the more extensive works devoted to them (8).
And Allah (9) is the One who grants success and provides guidance (10); there is no deity but He (11) (12).
Completed—praise be to Allah.
(1) MS J reads “mashayikh” (teachers), whereas MS Z has “al-shuyukh” (the teachers).
(2) The word “al-qadi” (the judge) is omitted in MS Z.
(3) MS J adds “al-hanbali” (the Hanbali), a reading also preserved in Nuzhat al-Nazar.
(4) MS Z reads “hadha” (this).
(5) In MS A the word appears as “mustaghniyatan” (dispensing with) in the accusative with tanwin, while in MS H it is “ghinyah” (sufficiency); the adopted wording follows MS W.
(6) MSS A, J, and D insert “wa hasruha mutaassir” (and listing them is difficult), whereas MS H inserts “wa hasruha muʿtabar” (and listing them is admissible); both phrases occur in manuscripts of Nuzhat al-Nazar.
(7) MSS B, J, W, and Ha read “fal yurajaʿ” (let it be consulted), while MS D has “fal turajaʿ, fal yurajaʿ,” employing both the ta and ya imperatives.
(8) The word “laha” (for it) is absent from MS Ha.
(9) MS W adds “aʿlam” (I know best).
(10) MSS W and Ha read “al-hadi” (the Guide) without the conjunction waw.
(11) The phrase “la ilaha illa huwa” (there is no deity but He) is missing from MS Ha; MS W adds “wa hasbuna Allah wa niʿma al-wakil” (Allah is sufficient for us and the best disposer of affairs); MS Z further adds “ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa ilayhi unib, wa hasbuna Allah wa niʿma al-wakil” (in Him I trust and to Him I return; Allah is sufficient for us and the best disposer of affairs).
(12) Colophon: MS A ends with, “End of the book; praise be to Allah alone; may Allah bless Muhammad, his family, and his companions. Dated the thirteenth of Dhu al-Hijjah, year 821 AH.”
