Istina' al-Ma'rufIbn Abi al-Dunya

63 – Abu Ḥassan, al-Ḥasan b. ʿUthmān al-Ziyādī, narrated to me; Shuʿayb b. Ṣafwān informed me, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, who said:

Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ declared, “May Allah disgrace any act of kindness that is not offered first, unsolicited. But when someone comes to you, the blood almost rising to his face, staking his dignity—unsure whether you will give or withhold—by Allah, even if you surrendered everything you own you would not have repaid him. A man who spends the night restlessly turning from side to side and decides that I am the one to approach for his need holds a favour over me; I have only discharged that favour for him.”
