“Those who practice acts of kindness (maʿrūf) in this world will be the people of kindness in the Hereafter, while those who commit wrongdoing (munkar) in this world will be the people of wrongdoing in the Hereafter. On the Day of Resurrection Allah will raise the people of kindness in the form of a traveller. He will come to his companion when the grave is split open, wipe the dust from his face, and say, ‘Rejoice, O friend of Allah, in the safety and honour granted by Allah. Let nothing of the terrors you behold on the Day of Resurrection alarm you.’ He will keep telling him, ‘Beware of this; avoid that,’ soothing his fear until he has escorted him across the Bridge (ṣirāṭ). When he has crossed the Bridge, the friend of Allah will turn toward his dwellings in Paradise, whereupon the kindness will step aside. He will cling to it and say, ‘Servant of Allah, who are you? All creatures abandoned me amid the terrors of the Day of Resurrection except you—so who are you?’ It will reply, ‘Do you not recognise me?’ He will say, ‘No.’ It will say, ‘I am the kindness you did in the world. Allah has brought me into being today so that He might reward you with me on the Day of Resurrection.’”
