171 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Bāhilī narrated, from his uncle, who said: Salm ibn Qutaybah said, ⦗135⦘ “Do not place your need before a liar, for he will push it far away when it is near and bring it near when it is far. Nor before a man who already has a meal owed him by some people, for he will use your need as a shield for his own. And do not take it to a fool, for he means to benefit you yet ends up harming you.”
