Istina' al-Ma'rufIbn Abi al-Dunya

170 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated, saying: Ziyād al-Aʿjam once entered upon ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿĀmir ibn Kurayz and recited:

A brother of yours whom you never see but that,
Though trials press him, he meets you smiling, open-handed.
A brother whose affection is never watered down;
Whenever his brother’s poverty returns, he returns with it.
We asked him for a lavish gift—he did not hesitate;
He gave beyond our hopes and then increased it still.
He acted kindly, then more kindly; we came back,
He excelled again; I returned once more and he repeated it.
Time after time I visit him, and never do I come
But that he greets me laughing and doubles up the cushion.
