151 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; he said: Jabala ibn Yazīd ibn Yaḥyā ibn Khālid recited to me:
You acted on my behalf in quest of gratitude,
yet I, overmatched, fell short—though grateful I remain.

You were wont to shower me with ample gifts, offhand and unprompted,
while anything I counted abundant you deemed paltry.
Thus I would return the envied one, and you would depart
bearing that distinction whose record of noble deeds begins and ends with you.
١٥١ - حَدَّثَنَا عبد الله قال حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قال أنشدني جبلة بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ خَالِدٍ
طَلَبْتَ ابْتِغَاءَ الشُّكْرِ فِيمَا فَعَلْتَ بِي ... فَقَصَّرْتُ مَغْلُوبًا وَإِنِّي لَشَاكِرُ

لَقَدْ كُنْتَ تُعْطِينِي الْجَزِيلَ بَدِيهَةً ... وَأَنْتَ لِمَا اسْتَكْثَرْتُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ حَاقِرُ
فَأَرْجِعُ مَغْبُوطًا وَتَرْجِعُ بِالَّتِي ... لَهَا أَوَّلٌ فِي الْمَكْرُمَاتِ وآخر
