134 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: al-Hasan ibn Dawud ibn Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir al-Taymi narrated to us; he said: a shaykh from Quraysh narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to ʿAʾishah, “Recite for me the poetry of Ibn Gharid the Jew.” So she recited:

When you would seek the company of a noble soul,
you will not find my cord slack or its strands worn thin.
I guard his trust and shield his honor in his absence
with all my strength; thereafter he may come as he pleases.
Raise up your weak one—his weakness will not weigh you down;
a day will come when consequences ripen and he will have grown.
He will repay you outright or else extol your name,
for whoever praises you for what you have done has indeed repaid.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said, “This is exactly what Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: Whoever has a favor done for him and conceals it has denied it; and whoever speaks of it has expressed gratitude for it.”
