119 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Abu Hudhayfah ʿAbd Allah ibn Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazārī related to me; he said: I heard my father say that Asmāʾ ibn Khārijah declared:
“I have never reviled anyone, nor have I ever turned a petitioner away. The one who asks me is only one of two men: either a noble person whom hardship and want have overtaken, and I am the one most entitled to relieve his need and assist him⦗99⦘ or an ignoble person from whom I ransom my honour.
In the same way, only one of two men ever abuses me: either a noble man who has slipped or stumbled, and I am the one most entitled to pardon him and outstrip him in virtue; or an ignoble man—and I would never surrender my honour to him.”
