117 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me; Yaʿqūb al-Zuhrī narrated to us; he said: I heard al-Darāwardī say:
Someone asked Muʿāwiya ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, “To what extent did ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar’s generosity reach?” He replied, “He regarded no wealth as set apart from the people; he and they were partners in all that he possessed. Whoever requested something from him, he gave it; and whoever asked him for a gift, he granted it. He never imagined that poverty would overtake him and make him hold back, nor did he assume he might one day need something and therefore hoard it.”
