9 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us. He said, “ʿUmar ibn Yahya ibn Nafiʿ al-Thaqafi related to me; ʿAbd al-Hamid ibn al-Hasan al-Hilali related to us; Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Every act of kindness is charity, and whatever a man spends on himself and his family is recorded for him as charity. Whatever he gives to safeguard his honor is likewise recorded for him as charity.’ I asked Muhammad, ‘What is meant by that last phrase—whatever a man gives to safeguard his honor?’ He answered, ‘It is what he gives to a poet or to a person of sharp tongue whose harm he fears.’
