Al-Muttaṣil (Connected)
If no transmitter is missing from the chain, the ḥadīth is described as muttaṣil (connected), and the absence of a gap is called ittiṣāl (continuity).
Al-Munqaṭiʿ (Interrupted)
If one or more transmitters are omitted, the ḥadīth is munqaṭiʿ (interrupted), and that omission is termed inqiṭāʿ (disconnection).
Al-Muʿallaq (Suspended)
When the break occurs at the very beginning of the chain, the report is labelled muʿallaq (suspended) and the act itself is called taʿlīq (suspension). The portion left out may be a single transmitter or several, and at times the entire isnād is dropped, as when compilers simply say, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said ….”
Al-Bukhārī’s Taʿlīqāt
Suspended reports occur frequently in the chapter headings of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. They are treated as effectively connected because he undertook to include in this book nothing but authentic material. Even so, they do not occupy the same rank as his fully-chained musnad narrations, except for those he cites elsewhere in the work with a complete isnād.
