The first group—the nation (1) upon whom wrath descended—are the Jews: people of falsehood, calumny, treachery, deceit, and stratagems; slayers of prophets and consumers of illicit wealth—namely usury and bribes. Among all nations they are the vilest in disposition, the worst in character, the farthest from mercy, and the nearest to vengeance (2). Enmity is their custom, and their constant occupation (3) is hostility and rancor. Their house is one of sorcery, lies, and schemes. For anyone who disagrees with them in their unbelief and denial of the prophets they recognize no sanctity, and toward a believer they observe neither bond nor covenant. Even those who agree with them are shown no right or compassion; (nor do they show fairness or equity to those who share with them) (4). Those who mingle with them find no reassurance or safety, and those who employ them receive no sincere counsel. Indeed, the most wicked among them is deemed the most intelligent, the more artful his deception the more competent he is considered; while a person of upright conscience (5)—and far be it that such exist among them—is not, in truth, a Jew at all. They are the narrowest of people in spirit, the darkest of them in homes, the foulest in courtyards, and the most savage in temperament (6). Their greeting is a curse, meeting them is an ill omen, their outer garment is wrath, and their inner cloak is loathing.

They have reviled God the Creator with a revilement unmatched by any human being, refusing to affirm that He is the One, the Unique, the Self-Sufficient, who neither begets nor is begotten and to whom none is comparable, nor did they hold Him
