Hidāyat al-ḤayārāIbn al-Qayyim

When what is in the graves is upheaved (1) and what is in the hearts is laid bare (2), mankind will stand before the Lord of all worlds, and a herald will proclaim, “Stand apart today, O you criminals” (Yā Sīn 59).

After that, each worshiper will have set before him the very object he used to adore and crave (3). Then the Lord—while every creature listens in silence—will say, “Is it not justice on My part to hand over every one of you to whatever he used to rely on in the world?” At that moment the polytheist will grasp the truth of his former state, and (4) the wretchedness of his end and his present plight will become plain to him. The unbelievers will realize that those they thought were their allies were never their allies at all; His true allies are none but the God-fearing.

“Say: ‘Do as you wish; Allah will see your deeds, as will His Messenger and the believers. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do’” (Qur’an 9:105).

When Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ, the inhabitants of the earth fell into two categories: People of the Scripture (5) and atheistic freethinkers (6) who possessed no scripture. The People of the Scripture were the better of the two, yet even they were divided into two groups: those who had incurred wrath and those who were astray.

(1) In manuscripts J and B the reading is: “baʿatha” (sent). (2) Manuscripts J and B add: “wa-inna rabbahum bihim yawmaʾidhin lakhabīr” (and indeed on that Day their Lord will be fully aware of them). (3) In manuscripts J and B the text reads: “mā kāna …”. (4) Manuscript G reads: “wayubayyinu” (and He makes clear). (5) Manuscripts B, G and J read: “al-kitāb”. (6) Manuscript G reads: “zanādiq” (plural of zindīq). The original sense of zandaqa was the doctrine of the world’s eternity; it was first applied to Zoroastrians, Manichaeans and other dualists, and later to anyone regarded as a skeptic, deviant or atheist. A zindīq is also one who denies the afterlife and the oneness of the Creator. See: Lisān al-ʿArab, 1/147; al-Miṣbāḥ al-Munīr, 1/256.
