Style and methodology of the book:
Anyone who studies Hidāyat al-Ḥayārā will observe that the author adopts a descriptive, inductive, critical, and comparative approach. It is descriptive in that he analyzes the material by collecting individual details, classifying and arranging them, while meticulously verifying the authenticity of each quotation, discussing it, and examining the surrounding explanations and interpretations.
It is also an inferential method that employs foundational juristic and linguistic principles, moving from particular instances to general truths. At the same time, it is comparative, setting opinions and statements against one another and weighing them even-handedly, without neglecting the historical perspective in many places. In this way, the method and procedure he follows form an integrated, comprehensive research program.
The book’s style is characterized by clarity of expression and avoids the dryness and complexity that often plague polemical works and rebuttals. It is further distinguished by the strength of its proofs and the variety of its reasoning techniques—qualities that leave no loophole for anyone seeking to evade the force of the evidence against those who raised the very doubts, issues, and objections that occasioned the writing of this work.
The book also contains digressions that circumstance sometimes invites; these benefit the reader, even though they may occasionally interrupt the flow of consecutive ideas and separate the paragraphs of a single, coherent topic.
Attribution of the book to its author and its title:
The ascription of the work to Ibn al-Qayyim is confirmed through several avenues: every manuscript copy explicitly names him as the author, and Ibn al-Qayyim himself—may Allah have mercy on him—mentions the title of this very book.
