—as Allah declares through the words of His Prophet, peace be upon him: “I said nothing to them except what You commanded me: ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’ I was a witness over them so long as I remained among them; but when You took me to Yourself, You were the One watching over them, and You are Witness over all things.” (al-Māʾidah 5:117).
The form of Christianity acknowledged by the Qur’an is also the one whose scriptures herald the coming of the Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and oblige those who encounter his mission after him to believe in it—precisely as the Qur’an itself relates on the tongue of the Messiah, peace be upon him.
Likewise, the Judaism affirmed by Islam is the religion brought by Moses, peace be upon him: a creed of pure monotheism that believes in Allah and the Last Day, forbids the killing of prophets, requires faith in the scriptures that contained its purified law, and believes in all of Allah’s messengers. It is marked by faith in Allah, obedience to Him, exclusive servitude, and the belief that the messengers are free from sin and protected from error.
These, then, are the religions Islam recognizes, ratifies, and praises—the very faiths the Noble Qur’an commends along with their adherents before the mission of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, for they were the Islam that Allah had revealed. When the law of Muhammad arrived, it became the final message and the form of Islam to which everyone must now return in order to be truly Muslim.
Stage Two: The second stage concerns the relationship between the Muhammadan shariʿah and the earlier divine laws after a long interval during which they were subjected to alteration, distortion, substitution, and concealment—changes sufficient to transform them from a monotheistic faith into idolatrous religions linked to their original revelation by nothing more than a thread thinner than a spider’s web, or by a connection that has no real substance at all.
At this point we see that the Noble Qur’an, regarding them in this stage, has added to its earlier stance
