in the One who sent him. They then said to him, “What sign will you show us so that we may believe in you, when you know that our forefathers ate the manna and quails in the wilderness?” He replied, “If Moses gave you bread to eat, I shall give you heavenly bread”—meaning the bliss of the Hereafter. Had they recognized any miracle of his, they would not have spoken in that way.
In the Gospel that you hold it is likewise written that the Jews said to him, “What sign will you present for us to trust you?” He answered, “Demolish the Temple and I will rebuild it for you in three days.” (2) If the Jews had known of any sign of his, they would not have asked that question; and had he previously displayed a miracle, he would have reminded them of it at that moment.
Furthermore, the same Gospel relates that they came asking him for a sign, but he rebuffed them, saying, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, yet no sign shall be given to it.” (4)
It also says that, while—according to your claim—he was on the cross, they kept saying to him, “If you are the Messiah, save yourself and we will believe in you,” demanding a sign from him; but he did not do so. (5)
Therefore, O Trinitarians, worshippers of the cross, once you have rejected the Quran no miracle or distinction remains firmly established for Jesus son of Mary, for neither your reports about him nor those of the Jews are worthy of reliance.
