years, yet the moment you were told of a dream someone had seen you rushed to believe it. It would have been more fitting for anyone who disbelieves in the Quran to deny that Jesus ever existed at all, for he cannot rely on the word of the Jews regarding him—especially when they are his greatest enemies, who hurled the gravest slanders at him and at his mother (1). Your only authorities concerning the Messiah and the cross are the Jews, while they themselves are in the most extreme disagreement about him, and you disagree with them as well!
The Jews claim that when they seized him they kept him in prison for forty days, saying, “You should not have held him for more than three days before killing him (2), were it not that one of the Roman commanders supported him, because he had shared with him in the practice of medicine.”
Yet in the Gospels (3) that you have in your hands it is written: “He was taken on Friday morning and crucified at the ninth hour of that very day” (4). When, then, will you ever be in accord with the Jews about his story? The Jews are unanimously agreed (5) that no miracle ever appeared from him, no sign was shown to them, except that on one occasion he supposedly flew into the air when they tried to seize him; another of them flew after him, overtook him in flight, and—so they claim—he fell to the ground!
Moreover, in the Gospel you possess—in more than one place—there is testimony that he had neither miracle nor sign. Among these is the explicit passage stating that “the Jews said to him one day: ‘What deed will you perform that will lead us to the command of God Most High?’ He replied: ‘God’s command (6) is that you believe…’”
