their own scriptures foretold his prophethood and pointed clearly to it (1). This is related about them in the Qur’an, corroborated by historical evidence dating back to the Prophet’s ﷺ own lifetime, and it fully accords with the very texts on which they rely, whether in the Old Testament or the New. Let us briefly set this out.
Allah, exalted is He, recounts the matter in the Noble Qur’an:
The Qur’an states that both the Torah and the Gospel contain references to the advent of Muḥammad ﷺ, to his message, to his description, and to the qualities of his Companions. The Almighty says: “Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet whom they find written down with them in the Torah and the Gospel—he enjoins on them what is right and forbids them what is wrong, makes lawful for them what is wholesome and prohibits for them what is foul, and removes from them their burden and the shackles that were upon them. So those who believe in him, honor him, support him, and follow the light that has been sent down with him—it is they who will prosper.” ⦗al-Aʿrāf 157⦘.
They are also aware of his ﷺ truthfulness and of the truth of the Book revealed to him:
You will see their sincere scholars acknowledging this; indeed, they know it is the truth from their Lord and therefore affirm it. When the verses are recited to them you behold them falling upon their chins in prostration: “When they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because they recognize the truth therein, and they say, ‘Our Lord, we believe—so record us among the witnesses.’” ⦗al-Māʾidah 83⦘. “Indeed, those who were granted knowledge before it—when it is recited to them they fall upon their chins in prostration, and they say, ‘Glory be to our Lord! The promise of our Lord has surely been fulfilled.’ They fall upon their chins weeping, and it increases them in humility.” ⦗al-Isrāʾ 107–109⦘.
