Hidāyat al-ḤayārāIbn al-Qayyim

wise (1), upright, and devout—so deeply grounded in jurisprudence that they seem like prophets. They are content with the meager provision Allah grants them, and Allah is content with the modest deeds they present to Him; by the testimony that there is no deity but Allah He will admit them to Paradise.

Kaʿb also said, “The scholars of this community are like the prophets of the Children of Israel.” Concerning this there is a hadith traced back to the Prophet, (2) the exact status (3) of which I do not know.

Then we say: What do you—O company of Trinitarians, worshippers of the cross, nation of curse and wrath—know of jurisprudence and knowledge? How can you even claim (4) this title while denying it to the Companions of Muhammad and their disciples, who are themselves like the prophets of the Children of Israel? (And who distinguishes scholars from the ignorant or recognizes the scholars’ true rank except someone who belongs to them and is counted among their number?!) (5)

As for the faction whose scholars Allah likened to donkeys laden with books, and the faction whose scholars speak about Allah in a way no other nation would tolerate regarding the one it venerates and exalts—taking its religion from every liar and fabricator against Allah and His prophets—their likeness is that of a naked man fighting someone fully armed, or of one whose roof is glass while he hurls stones. (6)

(1) In MS D the word reads “hulama” (forbearing). (2) MS J reads: “la aʿrifuhu wa la aʿrif …” (“I do not know him, nor do I know …”). (3) Al-Suyuti, Ibn Hajar, and al-Zarkashi report that some scholars cited this as a marfuʿ hadith, but it has no sound basis and is absent from the recognised collections; see: al-Suyuti, Tamyiz al-tayyib min al-khabith, p. 121; al-ʿAjluni, Kashf al-khafa, 2/83. (4) MSS G and S read “yusammi,” while MS D has “tusammi.” (5) The paragraph in brackets appears in MSS G and S before the phrase: “Then we say …”. (6) MSS G and S read “yuraham” (with the dotless letter), whereas MS D has “yuzahim.”
