—six qualities I have not granted to any other community) (1):
I do not take them to task for mistakes or forgetfulness; every sin they commit unintentionally, if they seek My forgiveness for it, I forgive them. Whatever they advance for their Hereafter, content in their hearts to do so, I hasten for them in this world in manifold, multiplied reward, better than what they offered, and what I have stored for them with Me is many times greater still. When calamity strikes them and they remain patient and say the words of istirjāʿ, I bestow upon them blessings, mercy, and guidance; and if they call upon Me, I answer them.
O David, whoever meets Me from the nation of Muhammad bearing witness, truthfully, that there is no god but I alone with no partner, shall be with Me in My Garden and in My honour. But whoever meets Me having denied Muhammad, or denied what he brought, and mocked My Book, I shall pour punishment upon him in his grave, and the angels will strike his face and back when he is raised therein; then I shall cast him into the lowest depth of Hell (2).
ʿAffān said: Hammām related to us, from Qatādah, from Zurārah b. Abī Awfā, from Muṭarrif b. Mālik, who said: I was present at the conquest of Tustar with al-Ashʿarī, and we came upon the grave of Dānīyāl in Sūs (3)—whenever the people suffered drought they would go out to it and seek rain through him. We found with him a parchment. A Christian from Ḥīrah named Nuʿaym asked for it, read it, and at the bottom of it was written: “Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers” (Āl ʿImrān 3:85). On that very day forty-two rabbis embraced Islam. This took place during the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah, who then honoured them and gave them gifts.
