A debate very much like this (1) occurred between one of the Muslim scholars and a Jewish interlocutor in the Maghreb. The Muslim said to him, “In the Torah that you still possess today it is written that God said to Moses: ‘I shall raise up for the Children of Israel, from among their brothers, a prophet like you. I will place My words upon his tongue, and whoever disobeys him I shall take vengeance on.’”
The Jew replied, “That is Joshua son of Nun.”
The Muslim answered, “That is impossible for several reasons:
- At the end of your Torah it also says: ‘Never again has there arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses.’
- The text says, ‘from among their brothers.’ The brothers of the Children of Israel are either the Arabs or the Romans, for the Arabs descend from Ishmael and the Romans from Esau, both of whom are brothers to the Children of Israel. No prophet arose among the Romans except Job, and he lived before Moses, so he cannot be the one foretold in the Torah. The only group left is the Arabs, the descendants of Ishmael and therefore the brothers of the Children of Israel. Moreover, God says in the Torah when speaking of Ishmael, the ancestor of the Arabs: ‘He will pitch his tent in the midst of the land of his brothers’—that is, among the Children of Israel. This is a clear announcement of the prophethood of his son Muhammad, who did indeed pitch his tent and whose community wielded authority in the very heart of the land of the Children of Israel, namely al-Sham, which, as mentioned earlier, became the seat of his dominion.”
