are equally addressed by this proclamation and its delivery (1): “O company of jinn and humankind…” (al-Anʿam 130; al-Rahman 33).
Allah—exalted is He—has detailed in the Noble Qur’an the hallmarks of this universal, all-embracing call, placing them before people in many of its verses. He says:
“Say, ‘O mankind, I am the Messenger of Allah to you all. His is the dominion of the heavens and the earth; there is no deity but Him. He gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him so that you may be guided.’ (158)” (al-Aʿraf 158),
“We have sent you only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner to all people, but most people do not know.” (Sabaʾ 28),
“O mankind, the Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe—it is better for you. But if you disbelieve, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth.” (al-Nisaʾ 170),
“Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His servant that he might be a warner to all the worlds.” (al-Furqan 1).
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also pointed to the universality of his mission, saying: “I have been given five things that were not granted to anyone before me: every prophet was sent only to his own people, whereas I have been sent to every red and black; spoils of war have been made lawful for me, though they were unlawful for anyone before me; the earth has been made for me wholesome, pure, and a place of worship, so whenever the time of prayer comes upon a man he may pray wherever he is; I have been supported with awe [cast into the hearts of my enemies] at a month’s distance; and I have been granted intercession.” (2)
