and of the earth the like thereof; the command is sent down between them.” [At-Talaq 65:12]. Ibn ʿAbbās said, “What assures you that, were I to explain it to you, you would not disbelieve?” (1) —meaning, if I disclosed its interpretation you might reject it, and that rejection would itself be unbelief.
Christ therefore said to them, “I still have much to tell you, but you are unable to bear it.”
He spoke the plain truth, and for that very reason the Gospel contains only general references to God’s attributes, to His dominion, and to the events of the Hereafter. The same holds for the Torah, which mentions the afterlife only in broad outline, even though Moses (peace be upon him) had already made the matter easier for Christ (2). Yet Christ still said to them, “I have much to say to you, but you cannot bear it.”
He then added, “But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you to all truth; he will inform you of everything that is to come and of all that belongs to the Lord.” (3)
This shows that it is the Paraclete—not Christ—who will accomplish these tasks, and so it proved: Muhammad ﷺ directed mankind to the entirety of the truth until Allah, through him, perfected the religion and completed His favor. For that reason he is the Seal of the Prophets; no prophet will come after him. Muhammad ﷺ also foretold everything that is to occur: the portents of the Hour, the Resurrection, the Reckoning, the Bridge (ṣirāṭ), the weighing of deeds, the Garden and its various delights, and the Fire with its manifold torments.
