and in the West, whether near or far, is one of the grossest fabrications and lies. More than one Muslim scholar has listed the disparities, additions, omissions, and contradictions that exist among those copies for anyone who wishes to look into the matter (1). Were it not for the risk of undue length, and because we aim to address matters of greater importance, we would have presented a sizeable portion of that material.

Allah—glorified be He—rebuked and chastised them, through the tongue of His Messenger, for their distortion, concealment, and suppression, saying:

“O People of the Scripture! Why do you mix truth with falsehood and knowingly hide the truth?” (Āl ʿImrān 3:71)

He also said: “Indeed, those who conceal what We have sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We have made it clear for humanity in the Book—those are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse.” (al-Baqarah 2:159)

And He said: “Indeed, those who conceal what Allah has sent down of the Book and exchange it for a small price—they consume nothing into their stomachs but fire. Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they will have a painful punishment.” (al-Baqarah 2:174)

And He said: “O People of the Scripture! There has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to hide of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book by which Allah guides those who seek His pleasure to the ways of peace, brings them out of darkness into light by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.” (al-Māʾidah 5:15–16)
