“Go, Salman, and dig the holes for them(1); when you have finished, come to me and I will plant them with my own hand.” So I dug the holes(2), and my Companions helped me. When the work was done I came to him and informed him, whereupon he went out with me to the orchard. We would bring each sapling close to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would set it in the ground with his own hand until we had finished. By Him in whose hand is Salman’s soul, not a single sapling died. Thus I discharged the obligation of the palm-trees, but the money still remained outstanding.
Soon afterwards a piece of gold the size of a hen’s egg, taken from one of the mines, was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He asked, “What has become of the Persian under contract of manumission?” I was summoned, and he said, “Take this and pay off(3) what you owe, O Salman.” I replied, “Messenger of Allah, how far will this go toward what I owe?” He said, “Take it; Allah will settle your debt with it.” I took it and weighed out from it for them—by Him in whose hand is my soul(4)—forty ounces, and thus I paid them(5) their full due. I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the Battle of the Trench, and thereafter I missed no engagement with him(6).
