The fourth category:
Al-musnad
Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī said: According to the ḥadith scholars it is any report whose chain of transmission is fully continuous to its endpoint, and the term is most often used for what comes from the Prophet ﷺ rather than from anyone else. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr maintained that it refers to whatever is transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ specifically, whether the chain is connected or broken. Al-Ḥākim and others held that the term is employed only for a marfūʿ narration whose chain is uninterrupted.
The fifth category:
Al-muttaṣil (connected)
Also called al-mawṣūl (linked). This is any report whose chain of transmission is unbroken, whether it is marfūʿ (ascribed to the Prophet ﷺ) or mawqūf, regardless of the person at whom the chain stops.
The sixth category:
Al-marfūʿ (elevated)
This denotes any narration attributed exclusively to the Prophet ﷺ; in its unrestricted sense it is not applied to anyone else, whether the chain is continuous or interrupted. Others have defined it as what a Companion relates concerning the Prophet’s actions or words.
