and among the women it was Khadijah, among the freedmen Zayd, and among the slaves Bilal. The last of the Companions to die was Abū al-Tufayl, in the year 100 AH; immediately before him came Anas.

Fifth:
No other instance is known of a father and son who both fought at Badr except Mirthad and his father; nor of seven migrant brothers except the Banū Muqarrin—who will be discussed under the chapter on brothers; nor of four successive generations who all met the Prophet ﷺ except ʿAbd Allāh, son of Asmāʾ daughter of Abū Bakr ibn Quḥāfah, and Abū ʿAtīq Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abū Bakr ibn Abū Quḥāfah.

Fortieth Category: Identifying the Successors (Tābiʿīn), may Allah be pleased with them
Together with the preceding category, this forms one of two great foundations through which the mursal and the fully connected isnāds are recognized. A single member is called a tābiʿī or tābiʿ. Some define him as one who kept company with a Companion; others hold that mere meeting suffices—and this second view is the stronger.

Al-Ḥākim said that the Successors fall into fifteen strata. The first consists of those who met the Ten promised Paradise, such as Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, Ibn al-Musayyib, and others. He erred, however, regarding Ibn al-Musayyib, for the latter was born during the caliphate of ʿUmar and did not hear from most of the Ten—though some say his hearing from someone other than Saʿd is sound. As for Qays, he both heard from them and transmitted on their authority, a distinction shared by no one else; some nonetheless say that he did not hear from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
