Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(124) “The Sabbath was imposed only upon those who differed over it. Surely your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.”

Allah Most High says: “The Sabbath was imposed”—that is, made obligatory—“only upon those who differed over it.” When the Jews went astray regarding Friday, their disagreement became the reason they were required to honor and venerate the Sabbath. Yet true excellence belongs to Friday, to which Allah guided this community.

“Surely your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.” He will make clear to them who upheld the truth and who followed falsehood, and who deserves reward and who deserves punishment (1).

(1) Manuscript Bāʾ reads: “the punishment.”
