(94) “Do not use your oaths as a means of deception among yourselves, lest a foot slip after it has been firmly planted, and you taste evil because you turned others away from the path of Allah. And you will have a tremendous punishment.”
That is, do not make your oaths, pledges, and covenants subject to your whims—honoring them whenever you please and breaking them whenever you please. If you do so, your feet will slip after having been firmly established upon the straight path, “and you will taste evil”—that is, a punishment that will cause you pain and sorrow—“because you turned others away from the path of Allah,” for you went astray and led others astray. “And you will have a tremendous punishment,” multiplied many times over.
