Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(93) “Had Allah willed, He would have made you one community. But He lets go astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do.”

That is, had Allah willed, He would have united all people upon guidance and made them “one community.” But He—exalted is He—is alone in guiding and causing to stray. His guidance and His causing to stray are among His acts, which accord with His knowledge and wisdom. By His grace, He grants guidance to those who deserve it, and in justice He withholds it from those who do not deserve it.

“And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do,” whether good or evil, and He will recompense you for it in the fullest and most just manner.
