(137) “So if they believe in the same as you believe in, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, they are only in opposition. Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
That is, if the People of the Scripture believe in the same as you, assembly of believers, believe in—namely, all the messengers and all the scriptures, foremost among them and most deserving of inclusion being Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the seal and best of the messengers, and the Quran, the final and best of the scriptures—and if they submit to Allah alone and make no distinction between any of Allah’s messengers, “they are rightly guided” to the straight path that leads to the Gardens of Bliss.
That is, they have no path to guidance except through this faith, contrary to their claim: “Become Jews or Christians, and you will be rightly guided.” They claimed that guidance was exclusive to the path they followed. Guidance is knowledge of the truth and acting upon it. Its opposite is ignorance of the truth and failure to act upon it after knowing it. This was the opposition in which they persisted when they turned away and rejected the truth. An opponent is one who stands on one side while Allah and His Messenger stand on the other. Such opposition necessarily entails defiance and intense hostility, which in turn lead them to exert every effort within their power to harm the Messenger.
Allah therefore promised His Messenger that He would suffice him against them, for He hears every voice, despite the differences in languages and the diversity of needs, and He knows what lies before them and behind them, the unseen and the seen, and all that is outward and inward. Since this is so, Allah will suffice you against their evil.
Allah fulfilled His promise to His Messenger and gave him mastery over them: some were killed, some were taken captive, some were expelled, and He scattered them in every direction.
This is one of the Quran’s miracles: it foretold an event before it occurred, and it came to pass exactly as foretold.
