(14) “It is He who has subjected the sea so that you may eat fresh meat from it and extract ornaments from it to wear. You see the ships plowing through it, so that you may seek His bounty and perhaps give thanks.”
That is, He alone, without partner, is the One “who has subjected the sea” and made it ready for your many uses: “so that you may eat fresh meat from it,” namely the fish and whales caught therein, “and extract ornaments from it to wear,” thereby adding beauty and adornment to the beauty you already possess. “You see the ships”—that is, vessels and boats—“plowing through it”: their prows cleave the vast, roaring sea as they travel from one region to another, carrying passengers, their provisions and belongings, and the merchandise through which they seek sustenance and Allah’s bounty upon them.
“And perhaps give thanks” to the One who has facilitated these things for you and made them ready for your use, and praise Allah, who has graciously bestowed them. All praise, gratitude, and acclaim belong to Allah Most High, for He has granted His servants benefits and advantages beyond what they seek and surpassing their highest hopes, and He has given them of everything they asked of Him. We cannot praise Him adequately; He is as He has praised Himself.
