⦗87–93⦘ “We have certainly given you seven of the oft-repeated and the magnificent Quran. Do not gaze longingly at the worldly enjoyment We have granted to various groups among them, nor grieve over them. Lower your wing to the believers, and say, ‘Indeed, I am the clear warner’—just as We sent down [punishment] upon those who conspired together.”
Allah Most High speaks of His favor to His Messenger: “We have certainly given you seven of the oft-repeated.” According to the correct view, these are the seven long surahs: al-Baqara, Āl Imrān, al-Nisā, al-Māida, al-Anām, al-Arāf, and al-Anfāl together with al-Tawba. Alternatively, they may be the Opening of the Book, since it consists of seven verses. In that case, coupling “the magnificent Quran” with it is an instance of coupling the general with the specific, because the oft-repeated surahs contain so much concerning monotheism, knowledge of the unseen, and sublime rulings, and because these matters are reiterated throughout them.
According to the view that the Opening is the seven oft-repeated, the meaning is that it consists of seven verses repeated in every unit of prayer. Since Allah gave him the magnificent Quran together with the seven oft-repeated, He gave him the finest thing for which people may vie and the greatest cause of joy for the believers:
“Say: Let them rejoice in Allah’s grace and mercy. That is better than all they accumulate.”
He therefore says immediately afterward: “Do not gaze longingly at the worldly enjoyment We have granted to various groups among them.” That is, do not admire it so greatly that your thoughts become preoccupied with the worldly desires enjoyed by the affluent and by which the ignorant are deceived. Instead, be content with the oft-repeated and the magnificent Quran that Allah has given you.
“Nor grieve over them,” for there is no good to be hoped for from them and no benefit to be expected. In place of them, the believers are the best ⦗435⦘ substitute and the finest compensation for you.
“Lower your wing to the believers”; that is, be gentle with them and show them fine character, treating them with love, honor, and affection.
“And say, ‘Indeed, I am the clear warner.’” That is, fulfill your duty of warning, conveying the message, and delivering it to those near and far, to enemies and friends alike. Once you have done so, you bear no responsibility for their reckoning, nor do they bear any responsibility for yours.
His words, “just as We sent down upon those who conspired together,” mean: just as We sent punishment down upon those who banded together to declare false what you brought and strove to turn people away from the path of Allah.
