Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(135) “They said, ‘Become Jews or Christians and you will be guided.’ Say, ‘Rather, we follow the way of Abraham, upright in faith; he was not one of those who associated partners with Allah.’”

That is, the Jews and Christians each called upon the Muslims to enter their religion, claiming that they alone were rightly guided and that everyone else was astray.

Say to him(1), giving a complete and conclusive answer: “Rather, we follow the way of Abraham, upright in faith”; that is, turning wholly toward Allah and away from all besides Him, upholding monotheism and abandoning polytheism and the setting up of rivals to Allah.

Following this way brings guidance, whereas turning away from Abraham’s way leads to disbelief and error.

(1) In manuscript B: “He said to him.”
