(32–34) “Allah is He who created the heavens and the earth, sent down water from the sky, and thereby brought forth fruits as provision for you. He has subjected the ships for you so that they may sail through the sea by His command, and He has subjected the rivers for you. He has subjected the sun and the moon for you, both ceaselessly pursuing their courses, and He has subjected the night and the day for you.”

The Exalted informs us that He alone is the One “who created the heavens and the earth” in all their vastness and immensity, “and sent down water from the sky”—namely, the rain that Allah sends down from the clouds—“and thereby brought forth” with that water “fruits” of many different kinds “as provision for you,” as well as provision for your livestock. “He has subjected the ships for you,” meaning vessels and boats,

“so that they may sail through the sea by His command.” It is He who made their construction easy for you, enabled you to build them, and keeps them afloat upon the water so that they may carry you, your merchandise, and your belongings to the land for which you are bound.

“And He has subjected the rivers for you” so that they may irrigate your fields and trees and provide you with water to drink.

“He has subjected the sun and the moon for you, both ceaselessly pursuing their courses”: they neither pause nor flag, but continue in service of your interests, enabling you to calculate time and benefiting your bodies, your animals, your crops, and your fruits. “And He has subjected the night for you” so that you may rest therein, “and the day,” illuminated so that you may seek His bounty.
