(37) “Thus We have sent it down as an authoritative judgment in Arabic. If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have neither protector nor defender against Allah.”
That is, We have sent down this Quran and this Book as an authoritative judgment in Arabic: perfected and masterfully composed in the clearest and most eloquent language, so that no doubt or confusion may arise concerning it; so that it alone must be followed, with no compromise made concerning it; and so that the desires of those who have no knowledge, which oppose and contradict it, are not followed.
For this reason, Allah warned His Messenger—even though he was protected from error—to remind him of His favor in safeguarding him and so that his nation would follow his example in these rulings. He said: “If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you”—the clear knowledge that forbids you from following their desires—“you would have no protector against Allah” to take care of you and secure what you desire for you, “nor defender” to protect you from what you dread.
