(25) “Those who break Allah’s covenant after it has been solemnly confirmed, sever what Allah has commanded to be maintained, and spread corruption on earth—it is they who will be cursed, and theirs will be the wretched abode.”
Having described the condition of the people of Paradise, He explains that the people of the Fire are the opposite of the qualities by which He described them. He says of them: “Those who break Allah’s covenant after it has been solemnly confirmed,” meaning after He had firmly imposed it upon them through His messengers and emphasized its gravity. Yet they did not respond with submission and compliance; rather, they responded by turning away and violating it.
“They sever what Allah has commanded to be maintained.” They neither maintained their relationship with their Lord through faith and righteous deeds, nor maintained ties of kinship, nor discharged the rights owed to others. Instead, they spread corruption on earth through disbelief and sin, turning people away from Allah’s path and seeking to make it crooked.
“It is they who will be cursed,” meaning banished and condemned by Allah, His angels, and His believing servants. “And theirs will be the wretched abode”—the blazing Fire and the painful punishment it contains.
