(7) “Those who disbelieve say, ‘Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’ You are only a warner, and every people has a guide.”
That is, the disbelievers demand that you produce particular signs of their choosing, saying, “Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?” They use this statement as an excuse for not responding to the Messenger, even though he is merely a warner who has no control over the matter; it is Allah who sends down the signs.
Allah has supported him with clear proofs that are evident to people of sound understanding and by which anyone sincerely seeking the truth will be guided. As for the disbeliever who, out of wrongdoing and ignorance, demands signs from Allah, his demand is false, a lie, and a fabrication (1).
Even if any sign whatsoever were to come to him, he would neither believe nor submit. His refusal to believe is not due to any lack of evidence demonstrating its truth; rather, it is due to his own inclinations and his pursuit of his desires. “And every people has a guide”—that is, someone who calls them to guidance from among the messengers and their followers. They possess evidence and proofs establishing the truth of the guidance they bring.
