โฆ84โ86โฆ โHe turned away from them and said, โAlas for Joseph!โ His eyes turned white with grief, while he suppressed his sorrow. They said, โBy Allah, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you waste away or perish.โ He said, โI complain of my anguish and sorrow only to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.โโ
That is, Jacob (peace be upon him) turned away from his sons after they had brought him this news. His grief and sorrow intensified, and his eyes turned white because of the sorrow in his heart and the anguish that caused him to weep so profusely that his eyes turned white.
โWhile he suppressed his sorrowโโthat is, his heart was filled with intense grief. โAnd he said, โAlas for Joseph!โโ That is, his long-concealed sorrow and abiding longing now came to the surface. This calamity, slight in comparison with the first, reminded him of that first calamity.
His sons said to him, astonished at his condition, โBy Allah, you will not cease remembering Josephโโthat is, you continually remember Joseph in every circumstanceโโuntil you waste away,โ meaning until you are so wasted that you can neither move nor speak.
โOr perishโโthat is, you will never stop remembering him for as long as you remain capable of doing so.
โHe saidโโJacobโโI complain of my anguish,โ meaning the words by which I give voice to my feelings, โand my sorrow,โ which is in my heart, โonly to Allahโโto Him alone, not to you or to any other created being. So say whatever you wish. โAnd I know from Allah what you do not knowโ: namely, that He will return them to me and grant me the joy of being reunited with them.
