(69–79) “When they entered Joseph’s presence, he drew his brother close to him and said, ‘I am indeed your brother, so do not grieve over what they used to do.’”
That is, when Joseph’s brothers entered his presence, “he drew his brother close to him”—meaning his full brother, Benjamin, whom he had commanded them to bring—[and] embraced him, singled him out from among his brothers, and informed him of the true situation. He “said, ‘I am indeed your brother, so do not grieve’”—that is, do not be saddened—“over what they used to do,” for the outcome will be good for us. He then told him what he intended to do and the stratagem he would employ to keep him with him until the matter reached its conclusion.
