“He said, ‘My dear son, do not relate your vision to your brothers, lest they devise a plot against you. Satan is indeed a manifest enemy to man. Thus will your Lord choose you, teach you something of the interpretation of visions and accounts, and complete His favor upon you and the family of Jacob, just as He completed it upon your forefathers Abraham and Isaac before. Your Lord is indeed All-Knowing, All-Wise.’”

“Thus will your Lord choose you”—that is, He will select and favor you through the noble qualities and admirable virtues He graciously bestows upon you. “And teach you something of the interpretation of visions and accounts”—that is, how to interpret dreams and explain what truthful accounts ultimately signify, such as the revealed scriptures and the like. “And complete His favor upon you” in this world and the Hereafter, granting you good in this world and good in the Hereafter, “just as He completed it upon your forefathers Abraham and Isaac before,” when Allah bestowed upon them immense and abundant blessings, both religious and worldly.

“Your Lord is indeed All-Knowing, All-Wise”—that is, His knowledge encompasses all things, including the righteousness and everything else concealed within His servants’ hearts. He therefore gives each person what His wisdom and perfect praise require. He is All-Wise: He puts all things in their proper places and assigns them their appropriate stations.

When the dream’s interpretation concerning Joseph became clear, his father said to him, “My dear son, do not relate your vision to ⦗394⦘ your brothers, lest they devise a plot against you”—that is, out of the envy arising within them because you would become their noble leader.

“Satan is indeed a manifest enemy to man.” He never relents in his hostility toward him, by night or day, in secret or openly. It is therefore better to avoid the means by which Satan may gain power over a servant. Joseph obeyed his father’s command and did not inform his brothers of the dream; rather, he concealed it from them.
