(108–109) “Say, ‘O mankind, the truth has indeed come to you from your Lord. Whoever accepts guidance does so only for his own good, and whoever goes astray does so only to his own detriment. I am not a guardian over you. Follow what is revealed to you and remain patient until Allah passes judgment, for He is the best of judges.’”
That is: “Say,” O Messenger, now that the proof has become clear, “O mankind, the truth has indeed come to you from your Lord.” ⦗376⦘ That is, the truthful message, supported by proofs and admitting of no doubt whatsoever, has reached you from your Lord. Among the greatest manifestations of His care for you is that He sent down to you this Quran, which explains all things and contains such rulings, divine teachings, and praiseworthy character as provide the finest cultivation for you and constitute a great act of benevolence from Him toward you. Right guidance has thus become distinct from error, and no grounds for doubt remain for anyone.
“Whoever accepts guidance” from Allah—by knowing and understanding the truth and preferring it to everything else—does so only for his own good. Allah Most High has no need of His servants; the fruits of their deeds return only to them.
“And whoever goes astray” from guidance by turning away from knowledge of the truth or from acting upon it “does so only to his own detriment.” He does not harm Allah in the least; he harms none but himself.
“I am not a guardian over you” who keeps account of your deeds and calls you to account for them. I am only a clear warner to you, while Allah is the Guardian over you. Therefore, attend to your own welfare while you are still within the period of respite.
“Follow,” O Messenger, “what is revealed to you” in knowledge, action, conduct, and calling others to it; “and remain patient” in doing so. This is the highest form of patience, and its outcome is praiseworthy. Do not grow idle or weary; rather, persevere and remain steadfast “until Allah passes judgment” between you and those who deny you, “for He is the best of judges.” His judgment encompasses perfect justice and equity, for which He is praised.
The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) obeyed his Lord’s command and remained steadfast upon the straight path until Allah caused his religion to prevail over all other religions and granted him victory over his enemies by sword and spear, after [Allah] had granted him victory over them through argument and proof. All praise belongs to Allah, and to Him belongs the finest acclaim, as befits His majesty, greatness, perfection, and boundless benevolence.
