⦗75⦘ “Then, after them, We sent Moses and Aaron”—to the end of the account.(1)
That is, “Then We sent,” after those messengers whom Allah had sent to the denying peoples who were destroyed, “Moses,” son of Imran, to whom the Most Merciful spoke. He was one of the resolute messengers and one of the great leaders who are followed as exemplars, upon whom momentous and comprehensive revealed laws were sent down.
“And” We appointed his brother “Aaron” as a minister to assist him. We sent them “to Pharaoh and his chiefs”—that is, the leading men and rulers of his kingdom, because the common people follow their leaders—“with Our signs,” which demonstrated the truth of what they brought: the affirmation of Allah’s oneness and the prohibition against worshipping anything besides Allah, the Exalted. “But they behaved arrogantly” toward the signs, out of wrongdoing and haughtiness, even after becoming certain of them.
“And they were a people of criminals.” That is, criminality and denial were their defining traits.
