Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(53–56) “They ask you, ‘Is it true?’ Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, it is certainly true, and you cannot escape.’”

Allah Most High says to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: “They ask you, ‘Is it true?’” That is, the deniers question you out of obstinacy and defiance, not in pursuit of clarity and guidance. (1)

“Is it true?” That is: Is the gathering of mankind, their resurrection after death for the Day of Return, and their recompense for their deeds truly certain—good for good and evil for evil?

“Say” to them, swearing that it is true and establishing it with clear evidence and proof: “Yes, by my Lord, it is certainly true.” There is neither doubt about it nor any uncertainty surrounding it.

“And you cannot escape.” You cannot prevent Allah from resurrecting you. Just as He first created you when you were nothing, He will bring you back once again to recompense you for your deeds.

(1) Manuscript B reads: “seeking guidance.”
