(46) “Whether We show you some of what We promise them, or cause you to die, to Us is their return. Then Allah is Witness over what they do.”
That is: Do not grieve, O Messenger, over these deniers, and do not seek to hasten their punishment, for the punishment We promise them will inevitably befall them—either in this world, in which case you will see it with your own eyes and your heart will be comforted by it, or in the Hereafter after death. Their return is to Allah, and He will inform them of what they used to do. He recorded it all, though they forgot it. Allah is Witness over all things. This verse therefore contains a stern warning to them and consolation for the Messenger, whom his people denied and stubbornly opposed.
