(28–30) “On the Day We gather them all together, We will say to those who associated partners with Allah, ‘Stay where you are—you and your partners.’ Then We will separate them, and their partners will say, ‘It was not us that you worshipped. * Allah is sufficient as a witness between us and you. We were certainly unaware of your worship. * There, every soul will examine what it had sent ahead. They will be returned to Allah, their true Master, and all that they had fabricated will vanish from them.”

Allah says: “On the Day We gather them all together”—that is, when We assemble all creatures at the appointed time on a known Day and bring forth the polytheists together with whatever they worshipped besides Allah.
“We will say to those who associated partners with Allah, ‘Stay where you are—you and your partners’”—that is, remain in your places so that judgment may be passed and the matter settled between you and them.
“Then We will separate them”—that is, We will divide them from one another, physically and emotionally. Intense enmity will arise between them, even though in this world they had devoted sincere love and pure affection to them. That love and allegiance will then turn into hatred and enmity.
Their partners will disown them and say, “It was not us that you worshipped,” for we declare Allah far above having any partner or equal.
“Allah is sufficient as a witness between us and you. We were certainly unaware of your worship.” We neither commanded you to worship us nor called you to do so. Rather, you worshipped the one who called you to it—Satan—as Allah says: “Did I not command you, O children of Adam, not to worship Satan? He is indeed a clear enemy to you.”
He also says: “On the Day He gathers them all together, He will then ask the angels, ‘Was it you whom these people used to worship?’ They will reply, ‘Glory be to You! You are our Guardian, not they. Rather, they used to worship the jinn, in whom most of them believed.’”
Thus, on the Day of Resurrection, the noble angels, the prophets, the righteous servants of Allah, and others like them will disown those who worshipped them and deny ever having called them to worship them. They will be truthful and righteous in doing so. The polytheists will then feel indescribable remorse. They will realize the true measure of the deeds they had sent ahead and the evil qualities they had displayed. On that Day it will become clear to them that they were liars who fabricated claims against Allah. Their worship will have come to nothing, their objects of worship will have vanished, and every tie and means upon which they relied will have been severed.
For this reason, Allah says: “There”—that is, on that Day—“every soul will examine what it had sent ahead.” In other words, it will inspect its deeds and what it earned, receive the resulting recompense, and be repaid accordingly: good for good and evil for evil. All their fabrications will vanish from them, including their claim that their polytheism was valid and that those whom they worshipped besides Allah would benefit them and protect them from the punishment.
