“They swear by Allah to you in order to please you, yet Allah and His Messenger have a greater right to be pleased, if they are believers. * Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger will have the Fire of Hell, abiding therein? That is the supreme disgrace.”
“They swear by Allah to you in order to please you,” thereby disavowing the hurtful things and other wrongs that proceeded from them. Their sole aim is that you should be pleased with them. “Yet Allah and His Messenger have a greater right to be pleased, if they are believers,” for a believer gives precedence to nothing over the pleasure of his Lord and the pleasure of His Messenger. This therefore demonstrates their lack of faith, since they gave precedence to pleasing others over pleasing Allah and His Messenger.
This is opposition and hostility toward Allah. He has threatened whoever opposes Him, saying: “Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger”—that is (1), places himself on a side and in a camp far removed from Allah and His Messenger by treating Allah’s commands lightly and daring to violate His prohibitions—
“will have the Fire of Hell, abiding therein? That is the supreme disgrace,” beyond which there is no disgrace more hideous or appalling: they have forfeited everlasting bliss and incurred the torment of Hell. We seek refuge in Allah from their condition (2).
