“They had already sought to sow discord before and had plotted against you until the truth came and Allah’s cause prevailed, though they detested it.”

He then mentioned their previous record of evil, saying: “They had already sought to sow discord before.” That is, when you migrated to Medina, they exerted every effort and “plotted against you”—they devised schemes and employed every stratagem to thwart your call and undermine your religion, sparing no effort in doing so—“until the truth came and Allah’s cause prevailed, though they detested it.” Thus, their schemes failed and their falsehood vanished. It is therefore only fitting, in the case of such people, that Allah should warn His believing servants against them and that the believers should pay no heed to their remaining behind.
